The Three Airports and What They Offer PA and DE Travelers
From southern Pennsylvania and Delaware, all three DC-area airports are reachable by ground: BWI (Baltimore/Washington International), DCA (Reagan National), and IAD (Washington Dulles). Each has a different distance profile, airline mix, and ground access consideration.
BWI is the closest DC-area airport for most PA and DE travelers — centrally located between Baltimore and Annapolis, it sits roughly 90 miles from Philadelphia, 65 miles from Wilmington, and 50 miles from Newark DE. Southwest Airlines operates its largest East Coast hub at BWI, making it the default for price-sensitive domestic routes. International connections are available but more limited than IAD.
DCA (Reagan National) is approximately 125 miles from Philadelphia and 110 miles from Wilmington. It offers the most convenient access to downtown Washington destinations post-landing but has slot restrictions that limit long-haul domestic routes. Flying to the Pacific Coast or Hawaii from DCA often requires a connection.
IAD (Washington Dulles) is approximately 145 miles from Philadelphia and 130 miles from Wilmington — the farthest DC-area airport from PA and DE origins. IAD is the primary international gateway for the DC region and the hub for United Airlines. For transatlantic and transpacific routes, IAD typically has more options than BWI or DCA.
Pennsylvania Cities — Which Airport Makes Sense
York, PA (85 miles to BWI, 100 miles to DCA, 90 miles to IAD): BWI is the natural choice for most routes. IAD is reasonable for international travel. DCA adds unnecessary DC-area traffic exposure.
Harrisburg, PA (95 miles to BWI, 120 miles to DCA, 100 miles to IAD): BWI is the primary option. Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) serves a few routes but is limited — BWI provides significantly more connections.
Gettysburg, PA (80 miles to BWI, 85 miles to DCA, 75 miles to IAD): the triangle is relatively even here. For domestic travel, BWI and DCA are both accessible. For international, IAD is roughly equidistant and provides more options.
Chambersburg, PA (100 miles to BWI, 95 miles to DCA, 80 miles to IAD): IAD is closest and makes sense for international routing. BWI works for Southwest and domestic carriers.
Pittsburgh, PA: Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is the practical choice for Pittsburgh-area travelers — it is not within reasonable ground transfer range of DC-area airports. Driving to BWI from Pittsburgh is approximately 3.5 hours, which only makes sense for very specific flight itineraries unavailable at PIT.
State College, PA (200 miles to BWI, 235 miles to DCA): a 3-hour drive makes BWI the only reasonable DC-area airport option for central PA. PHL (Philadelphia) is closer at approximately 155 miles.
Delaware Cities — Airport Selection
Wilmington, DE (65 miles to BWI, 110 miles to DCA, 130 miles to IAD): BWI is clearly the right airport. The I-95 south to I-695 to BWI route is straightforward and predictable. Philadelphia International (PHL) is actually slightly closer at 15 miles — for travelers whose airline is at PHL, that is the better choice. But for Southwest, United domestic, and international travel not served by PHL, BWI is the answer.
Dover, DE (80 miles to BWI, 125 miles to DCA): BWI is the airport. Dover has no commercial service.
Bethany Beach and Rehoboth Beach, DE (120–130 miles to BWI): the route mirrors Eastern Shore Maryland — Route 1 north to Route 50 west to the Bay Bridge to BWI. Bay Bridge timing considerations apply. For beach departure windows with early morning flights, plan the Bay Bridge crossing for before 7am in summer.
Newark, DE (55 miles to BWI, 15 miles to PHL): Philadelphia International is the practical airport for Newark DE travelers. BWI is the backup for routes not served at PHL.
Why Pre-Booked Ground Transfer Makes Sense for Long-Distance Airport Trips
PA and DE airport transfers are long-distance trips — 60 to 145 miles depending on origin and destination airport. Three characteristics of long-distance airport trips make pre-booked ground transfer significantly better than rideshare or self-driving:
Driver availability at origin: a 4am pickup request in Gettysburg PA or Bethany Beach DE is not a favorable rideshare scenario. Driver density in smaller PA and DE cities is thin, especially at pre-dawn airport departure windows. A pre-booked transfer with a confirmed driver eliminates the availability risk entirely.
Cost predictability on long routes: rideshare fare estimates for 100-mile trips are highly variable. Surge pricing on early-morning inter-state trips is common. A flat rate locked in at booking is the only way to know exactly what the trip costs before your travel day.
Productivity on long drives: a 90-minute drive from York to BWI is 90 minutes of work time if someone else is driving. Phone calls, email, presentation review — the vehicle is your office for the first 90 minutes of your travel day instead of being dead time behind the wheel.
Multi-State Flat Rates — How Pricing Works
Interstate routes from PA and DE are priced as flat rates by origin city and destination airport. The rate reflects the driving distance, typical route time, and any toll overlays on the route (I-95 tolls in Maryland, Bay Bridge for shore routes).
PA origins: York, Gettysburg, Chambersburg, Harrisburg, and Hershey have flat rates to BWI, DCA, and IAD. Rates range from approximately $125 to $295 depending on origin city and destination airport.
DE origins: Wilmington, Dover, Bethany Beach, and Rehoboth Beach have flat rates to BWI and DCA. Rates range from approximately $79 to $229.
